Orthopaedic Personalized Care Medications and Prescriptions

How do I get a refill on my prescription?

We encourage patients with questions regarding their medications or prescriptions to call during our regular office hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST).

If you are calling off-hours, please have the medication name and pharmacy telephone number ready for the physician when you call.

Narcotic Pain Medications

Narcotics are highly addictive pain medications that can have side effects such as constipation, confusion and lethargy. Many narcotics, such as Percocet and Norco contain acetaminophen (Tylenol), which if taken in excessive doses can cause severe liver damage.

Narcotic pain medications must therefore be used with caution. With prolonged use the body develops a tolerance to these medications, whereby increasing doses are required to provide adequate pain relief. As tolerance develops, patients may come to depend on narcotics for pain relief, and a patient’s perception of the pain may worsen with narcotic dependence.

For these reasons, our physicians and physician-assistants prescribe narcotic pain medications with caution. In the appropriate situations, such as after an injury or after surgery, we will provide prescriptions for pain medicines for patients with acute pain. The Knee, Hip and Shoulder Center does not specialize in chronic pain management. If pain becomes a chronic problem or if the requests for narcotics become excessive, disproportionate to the clinical problem, or prolonged (greater than 2-3 months from injury or surgery), we will refer you to a Pain Management Clinic in order to receive specialist care for this area.

Also note, that it is the strict policy of this office that narcotics and other pain medication prescriptions will NOT be refilled on weekends or after hours. Please try to anticipate in advance if your current prescription will run out over a weekend so you can obtain a refill prior to the office close on Friday.
